Race week, Monday through Friday, visit us at Forerunners Main St. during Package Pickup hours. Race day pick-up is not available. For the Virtual Race only, you may mail your race kit within Canada for a shipping and handling fee. Shipping is not available for the In-Person event as your kit includes various goodies including a Race Bib with a Timing Chip that could potentially be damaged if mailed. Dates and location subject to change. 

October

VIRTUAL RACE : OCTOBER 16-31

You may run your Virtual Race anytime between October 16-31 and upload your results during this time frame. Choose a 5KM, 10KM, 21.1KM, or run all three event distances! You may also run a hybrid of some events virtually and others in-person, space permitted. Spots will be limited.

IN-PERSON : OCTOBER 23

The Great Trek is traditionally held in October. Details on the in-person races are to be confirmed but they’re scheduled to run Saturday, October 23, and will include an official Start Line, Finish Line, timing and results. All in-person races are subject to permits and approval by local health authorities. Race day Package Pickup will be unavailable, so please visit us beforehand at our partner, Forerunners.

B.C. VACCINE CARDS AND MASKING

PROOF OF VACCINATION AND MASKS REQUIRED FOR FALL 2021 RACES

RUNVAN® is requiring proof of vaccination and masks for its Fall 2021 Races. Runners will be required to produce the B.C. Vaccine Card showing proof of double vaccination for this year’s Granville Island Turkey Trot, October 11, and Great Trek, October 23, 2021, and wear masks during select times. Virtual Race participants will not be required to show proof of vaccination or wear masks.

RUNVAN® introduces this new in-person event policy following the province’s announcement that individuals are be required to show proof of vaccination to access a broad range of social, recreational, and discretionary events in B.C, as of September 13, 2021, continued through at least January 31, 2022.

Provincial health orders state masks are mandatory again in public indoor spaces throughout the province, and where physical distancing may not be possible. As such, masks will now also be mandatory during RUNVAN®’s upcoming Fall events during Package Pickup, in the Start Line and Finish Line areas and within all indoor venues. Masks may be removed when racing outside and should carried by the runner.

Performance Works on Granville Island and the University of BC, where the Granville Island Turkey Trot and Great Trek respectively take place, will also require proof of vaccination and masking at their indoor venues.

The event’s chief medical officer and Rockdoc, the official medical team for RUNVAN® events, have advised the non-profit organizers to adhere to these noted health and safety protocols. The double vaccination policy aligns with best practices being administered by other large events. Athletics Canada has similarly announced that everyone over the age of 12 who is participating in Athletics Canada events must be fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus.

The B.C. government is implementing the new vaccine passport program and mask mandates to manage the latest surge in COVID-19 cases. “Getting vaccinated is the way forward through the pandemic,” added B.C. premier John Horgan, alongside provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, during a news conference announcing the overall B.C. Vaccine Card requirements.

RUNVAN® will additionally accept alternative vaccine verifications as approved by the Province and Health Canada. Participants from other Canadian provinces or territories must show their provincially/territorially officially recognized vaccine record and valid government photo ID, while any international participants must show the proof of vaccination they used to enter Canada and their passport.

Runners will be requested to acknowledge this change in policy during online registration, and they will be required to show their proof of vaccination alongside valid government photo ID at Package Pickup in order to collect their race bibs.

RUNVAN® volunteers will similarly have to show proof of double vaccinations and adhere to the mask mandates.

Anyone who is sick or showing symptoms of COVID-19 is requested to avoid event participation for the safety of others, and to contact the event organizers for deferral options. Please continue to be respectful of others.

Safety is Priority

Limited spots are available for all events to help reduce potential congestion.

This will still be RUNVAN®’s second largest event behind only the BMO Vancouver Marathon so register now to secure your spot.

PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL AND FOLLOW ALL EVENT RESTRICTIONS

Safety continues to be the top priority for event organizers, and RUNVAN® has updated its traditional race offerings to support the return of in-person races for this year’s Fall events. To support physical distancing, in-person races may feature additional corrals, additional start waves, and include an increase in overall spacing requirements within staged areas. Participants will also have access to sanitation stations at multiple locations near package pickup, the Start Line area, Finish Line area, and indoor venues.

Indoor space and post-race festivities race day will be limited or removed. To help reduce congestion and increase physical distancing, race day package pickup has also been removed, however, participants will have an increased number of days to visit package pickup prior to race day. Proxy pickup will also be available with the appropriate documentation, allowing others to pickup on the behalf of a registered runner.

Water stations on-course for the Fall 2021 races will be limited to one location, to again reduce the potential spread of any diseases. Runners are encouraged to be self-sufficient where possible and to bring their own hydration as appropriate. Masks will now also be mandatory at Package Pickup, the Start Line area, Finish Line area, and indoor venues. For the purposes of the provincial order, a mask or face covering is defined as a medical or non-medical mask that covers the nose and mouth. Face shields and race wraps are not a substitute for a mask. Please bring your own mask.

Event organizers will continue to closely monitor all health guidelines and follow the appropriate regulations. Event details are always subject to change, as permits are subject to the approval from governing bodies. RUNVAN® has various event plans that will be adjusted according to the official guidelines of the Provincial Health Officer, City of Vancouver, and Vancouver Parks Board, to support the return of in-person racing. Participant safety is always a top priority.

Deferral Policy

Should organizers be forced to cancel the in-person event altogether, the RUNVAN® Deferral Policy will apply.

Deferral will include entry into this year’s Virtual Race, race swag, plus a partial discount into next year’s race.

Cancellation AFTER August 15, 2021, until race day October 23, 2021:

  • Entry to the 2021 Great Trek Virtual Race, race bonuses, AND
  • 25% Deferral discount to the 2022, 2023 or 2024 Great Trek

Refunds are not provided per race policies agreed to upon registration. Event funds are often spent well in advance of race day per traditional ordering timelines and supplier deposit terms, and registration can’t simply be returned. RUNVAN® invests in marketing, has fixed operational costs, plus makes large advance purchases. Since that product is ordered months in advance, refunds on products like medals and giveaways are unavailable. Registrants will still have an opportunity to complete the Virtual Race and collect their commemorative rewards.

BIB LOOKUP

All runners are traditionally assigned a bib number and corral according to their estimated finish time. Please also note race bibs may not be transferred for legal and lability reasons and per race policies. Thank you.

Personalized bibs and estimated finish times may be updated until approximately two weeks prior to the race.

PACKAGE PICKUP

Race day pickup and sales are unavailable. Every runner is required to pickup their kit during Package Pickup hours. Registration is also available during these Package Pickup hours via credit card payment. Only credit card payment is accepted. Only Visa and Mastercard are accepted, not Debit or cash.

You will be required to present your bib number, picture ID and your B.C. Vaccine Card showing proof of double vaccination in order to collect your race bib.

To pick-up another runner’s race package, please have their full name and confirmation number, a copy of their valid photo ID, plus a screenshot image of their official B.C. Vaccine Card which includes their name and unique QR Code.

For groups of five or more, please email info@runvan.org with all of the names in advance so me may prepare the kits ahead of time.

Your kit includes various race bonuses including exclusive Great Trek gloves and a $25 Forerunners gift card valid on a minimum $75 spend.

If you run the Virtual Race, you may also have your race kit mailed to you for $10 shipping and handling. Shipping is not available for In-Person races as Race Bibs with Timing Chips will not be mailed. Note there is no race day Package Pickup.

In-Person Races

In-person events are back now that restrictions are lifted! Please note that traditional services like gear check, race day package pickup and entertainment will still be limited or removed. Additionally, RUNVAN® has made new changes to the Start Line Area and Finish Line Area in order to host you. The in-person race will include an official Start Line, Finish Line, timing and race results. 

Virtual Races

You may run, walk or stroll your race distance at your own pace and at a time and location of your choice, following the guidelines of your local health authorities. You may choose your own race day and your own starting line, whether it’s a treadmill, a park, your neighbourhood streets or Seawall. For the Virtual Race, you’re asked to please find your own pedestrian friendly route.

When may I run the race?

IN-PERSON : SATURDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2021

  • Half Marathon : 8:30am start (Corral: Black 8:30am, Grey 8:34am, Blue 8:38am, Yellow 8:42am, Pink 8:45am)
  • 10KM : 10:30am start (Corral: Black 10:30am, Grey 10:35am, Blue 10:40am, Yellow & Pink 10:45am)
  • 5KM : 12pm Noon start (Corral: Black 12:00pm, Grey & Blue: 12:05am, Yellow & Pink 12:10am)

VIRTUAL RACE : OCTOBER 16-31

  • You may run the Great Trek Virtual Race anytime between October 16 through October 31. Please exercise proper social distancing and follow the guidelines of your local health authorities.

Start Live In-Person

In-Person: Please arrive early on race day.

  • Access: Parking will be available in the North Parkade and by the Rose Garden. For a view of the Start & Finish Area, parking options, gear check and portable toilet locations, please visit this map.
  • Gear Check: On the southside of the UBC Student Life Building you’ll find Gear Check. Please place all items you’d like checked into your own bag. Detach the tear-off tag at the bottom of your race bib, and attach it to this bag, and then hand your one checked bag to the volunteers at Gear Check. After you finish, return to Gear Check and show your race bib to collect your bag. Note: RUNVAN® is not responsible for lost or damaged goods, and all clothing discarded near the Start Line will be donated to charity.
  • Toilets: Portable outdoor toilets will be available near the UBC Student Nest. Additional washroom facilities are available inside the Student Nest when wearing a mask and providing proof of vaccination with Photo ID.
  • Pacers: Pacers will help guide runners with the goal times. Pacers will be visible with RUNVAN® pacer shirts and signs and may be found in the start corrals.
  • Corrals: Start waves feature colour-coded corrals. Approximately four minutes prior to your estimated Start Time, you’ll be invited to enter from the back of the the Start Line Area

    • 21.1KM : 8:30am start (Corral: Black 8:30am, Grey 8:34am, Blue 8:38am, Yellow 8:42am, Pink 8:45am)
    • 10KM : 10:30am start (Corral: Black 10:30am, Grey 10:35am, Blue 10:40am, Yellow & Pink 10:45am)
    • 5KM : 12pm Noon start (Corral: Black 12:00pm, Grey & Blue: 12:05am, Yellow & Pink 12:10am)
  • Spacing: Please maintain physical distance within the Start Line Area. To help maintain physical distancing, you’ll enter into one of five lanes pre-race and then walk calmly towards the Start Line.
  • Sanitization: Sanitization stations will be set-up in multiple locations, including near the Start Line Area. You’re encouraged to utilize these services and are reminded to please stay home if you feel unwell.
  • Masking: Masks must be worn inside this Start Line Area, and may be removed once you cross the Start Line. Masks should be carried by the runner, and will be required again within the Finish Line Area.
  • Chip Times: Overall and Age Group Placings will be determined by Chip Time, not Gun Time. Your official timing chip is included on your race bib which must be visible at both the Start Line and Finish Line. Your time will officially start once you cross the Start Line timing mats.

Finish Line In-Person

In-Person: Race day.

  • Overview: The Great Trek is officially measured and marked. Both the Start Line and Finish Line are located near the UBC Student Nest.
  • Masking: Masks must be worn within the Finish Line Area after you’ve completed your run. Masks should be carried by the runner, and will be required in the Start Line Area as well.
  • Water: Water will be available oncourse four times for the Half Marathon and twice for the 10KM while there is no oncourse water station for the 5KM. Water will be available to all runners after crossing the Finish Line.
  • Medals: Medals will be awarded to all finishers!
  • Food: Food will also be available for runners as you continue on towards the food tent in the Plaza. The menu includes chips, bars, bananas, cookies and Nuun. Please help yourself to one serving of each item.
  • Results: Chip timed results will be posted online at greattrek.ca/results
  • Patience: Please note there may be cues for certain services such as the toilets. Please be patient and maintain safe physical distancing. Thank you!

Where is the Race Course?

In-Person: The Great Trek is held near the University of British Columbia, on-campus and in the surrounding area. Take part in ‘a jaunt through Musqueam territory’.

Virtual: Please choose your own route for this virtual event. It would be unsafe for us to provide a route that all could use at any specific time, as that may contribute to social distancing concerns. Additionally, by allowing registered runners to create their own routes, you may participate from wherever you are! Use caution if running outside, and be alert of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.

Virtual Race Precautions

On Race Day, runners usually wear a race bib with a timing chip and emergency contact info. This will be included on your bib for the In-Person event. For the Virtual Race, for safety reasons, please give someone else your race route and have an emergency contact located on your body or phone while you’re out just in case.

Aside from practicing safe, physical distancing, be alert of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Remember, there are no road closures in effect during your Virtual Race. Try to stay on sidewalks or trails as much as possible and be sure to obey all traffic signals. If you’re going to listen to music, ensure you can still hear what’s going on around you. Treadmill racing may also be an option for you.

RESULTS

In-Person race registration includes a Race Bib with a Timing Chip, and official results that will be posted online!

Virtual Race participants may submit their times from October 16-31. Virtual Race participants may use their unique ‘Confirmation Code‘ provided during registration as their ‘Claim Code‘ to record and submit Virtual Race results. You may upload data from your tracking device, or via manual input. Be sure to also share your ‘Finish Line’ photos on social @runvancanada #runvan
